In my never ending quest to fix my weird hot start issue I followed some advice from a post on the samba. Here is some info about the issue:
- Cold start is perfect, like a new car.
- Drive for 10 minutes turn it off and back on, it starts 9/10
- Drive for 10 minutes, turn it off wait 2 minutes and it is rough to start.
— The starter works, it can move the car.
— The voltage is good.
— I can push start it with 100% success in a few feet.
— Jump pack can start it as well. - The battery is less than a year old
- The connectors are clean and tight
So it would seem the culprit may be too much fuel pressure. Before I buy a fuel pressure regulator I tried “shimming” it to lower the pressure. Which involves adding gaskets below the pump until the car starts correctly. I will go buy a fuel pressure gauge and plumb it in to get a reading this week. In the pic below it shows where the extra shim goes.

My test ride showed good results. I drove it for 10 mins, stopped for 2 and it started right up. More driving will be done.
