When last we met, I replaced the in tank fuel filter. During that I discovered that the tank was rusty and gross. I had been experiencing this weird stalling issue on my last few drives, assuming the rusty tank was the problem I ordered a new tank from Wolfsburg West. While I was at it, I replaced the two gas filters I have, the in tank filter and a missing fuel line grommet.

I removed the tank and cleaned up all the schmutz that accumulated over the years.

Since the tank is all of the way out, I wanted to take a good pic of the aux pump setup.

I took the opportunity to replace the missing tunnel grommet. You can see the hole here.

Added bonus of the grommet being in place, putting the fuel line back on because so much easier.

The new tank came powder coated gray and seemed really clean.

Before I put the tank in I replaced the filter in front of the aux pump in case it was clogged from the dirty old tank.

You reinstall the in tank filter, the outlet tube, the fuel level sending unit and put it all back in. I also replaced the hold downs, since the tank was so nice looking.

People did complain that this tank had a bump on the back that caused a problem with the frunk carpet. I don’t know, it seemed fine to me. Admittedly this is a baja so standards are lower…

I also replaced the rear fuel filter that is above the rear wheel for the same reason.

At this point all of the fuel lines are new Eckstein 5.5mm braided lines from BelMetric. I took it for a drive and it died at the end of the driveway. I pulled off the outlet of mechanical fuel pump and while the line had gas in it, no gas would move through it if I turned on the electric pump or turned the engine over. I unhooked the inlet to the pump and it was full of gas, if I turned on the electric pump gas streamed out. I hooked everything back up and was able to get home. But I have no idea what the problem is. I had a hot start issue, which I think is corrected, while I was fixing that I did:
- Replaced the starter, distributor and coil.
- Replaced the spark plugs and wires.
- Raised the gas line up away from heat sources.
- Replaced the intake manifold boots.
- Replaced the ground straps and positive battery cable.
- Installed a hard start relay.
- Adjusted the carb.
- February I adjusted the valves
- December replaced the pump with a rebuilt Pierburg Pump
- Replaced every wire I could and crimped new ends where I couldn’t.
- About to throw in the towel…
