We Must Tear it Down to Build it Up

I finally connected with the people at Verve Vintage Motorworks to do some work on the baja that was outside my skill set. Have you seen these guys before? They specialize in air cooled VW and Porsches and raced the Paris to Peking rally in a 1969 Porsche.

I had a laundry list of what I wanted:

  • Modern oil filter adapter
  • Replace front and rear tunnel bushings
  • Install empi cast rear disc brakes
  • New shocks
  • Electric fuel pump/remove mechanical
  • Install sand seal
  • New front brake pads
  • New trans mounts
  • New axle boots
  • Tune up
  • Check transmission
  • Steel front baja bumper

Now the last two… well they opened up a can of worms. Apparently I was down 40% on the 2nd cylinder and 50% the 4th. They are rebuilding the engine, and apparently I have a 1776. The transmission had been funny lately, really grinding going from 3->2, and hard to get into 1st. I am just having them rebuild that too and check out the clutch too. They have been upfront and honest so far, which is just a refreshing change of pace.
