Ever since I bought this baja, the speedometer needle has bounced like the graphic equalizer on Radio Rahim’s boom box. I got a replacement VW speedometer cable from JBugs and this 5 minute job only took an hour and half. Which if I am being honest, is pretty good for me, I didn’t even make it worse in the process.

First thing I did was watch a video on YouTube from JBugs.
Then I looked at the Muir book, it was not covered. My old Haynes manual did have instructions.

I ordered a cable, circlip speedometer spindle seal and body seal all from JBugs.

I had to remove my front wheel because the hub was covered by the chrome cover of my knock off Centerline wheels.

This was also my first time using the AGM Scissor Jack, it was really stable and much faster than the cheap scissor jack I used in the past.
Next unscrew the speedometer cable from the back of the speedo.

You’ll need to remove the grease cover from the hub, mine did not have a circlip, but it should have.

Pull the cable out of the back of the hub. It took some needle nose vise grips and WD 40 to get it out. Which is why you want to buy new grommets/seals from JBugs before you start. Mine got ruined.

Route your new cable through the frunk, down into the hub and insert the new grommet.

Reattach the cable to the speedometer, then reinsert the cable through the hub. I put a little WD40 on the cable.

Put the cap on, I tapped it with a mallet.

Then add the tiny circlip and you are done! Go for a drive.

Look how smooth that needle is.
