When I installed the sPod in my Baja I ran the cat 6 cable for the switches through my ashtray in the dash. It never really felt right. It was an aftermarket ashtray installed by a PO at some time that didn’t sit flush and frankly had years of muck in it. I drilled a hole through the ashtray, the holder, etc. But even though I filed the edges down they were sharper than ZZ Top (sharped dressed man, ok joke, good song). With that in mind and a lot of PETG filament I printed up a replacement. It would have to mount inside the frunk behind the dash and look stockish on the dash side.
Old stuff :

With that removed I got to the printer. The back mount was done in two versions , the front mount took 4 or 5 iterations.

I decided to use 4mm nutzerts as the mount for the small screws.

The final version of the ashtray cover had a little ridge on the back so you could tighten down the screws without it breaking.

In the front I used a small piece of drawer liner (hey it is what I had on hand) to create a dust/wind grommet.

All mounted up.

Now on the back of the dash I also used a piece of rubber liner to seal out dust and air. I printed a little cover to hold it in place using nutzerts too.

I think it looks good and now there is no threat of it getting cut on dirty jagged metal of a 60 year old ashtray.
