Installing the Vintage AirCooled Parts Fire Extinguisher Mount

Well it is clear I am not an experienced auto mechanic, which is why I got this beetle and why I decided to carry a fire extinguisher. Why not have some cheap insurance? I picked up a Vintage AirCooled Parts Fire Extinguisher mount to in the baja. It looks great and works perfectly.

It is nicely made out of stainless steel with dimpled holes for strength and that hot rod look.

VACP offers this in a vertical or horizontal mount. On my bug there is thick steel used for the seat mounts. I went for the horizontal mount thinking the seat frame would be a good spot for the extinguisher. Please ignore the surface rust. In the summer when it is warm I will paint this, but it will take too long to dry in the winter.

The bottom of the VACP Extinguisher Mount has a strap to secure the fire extinguisher, which would not be a problem if I mounted it on carpeted spot. However mounted on this metal post it rocked on the strap. Easy enough to fix with some spare drawer liner, two layers on the bottom, one with a cut out for the strap.

Poked holes for the M5 stainless bolts.

I checked the fit on the metal seat frame and drilled two 5/32″ holes.

Then I tapped the holes using a M5 x 0.8 tap and a bit of oil.

They say measure twice, cut once. To that end I threaded this, then screwed in the bolt, then I marked the second hole and repeated the drilling and threading process.

To avoid rattling I put one more layer of drawer liner in below the extinguisher.

All done!

Easy to reach, unobtrusive and stylish, what more could you ask for?
