Almost Replacing the Shift Coupler

I thought a bit of preventative maintenance would be to replace the shift coupler in the 66 beetle.

Assuming it would be easy, but also not wanting to hook anything up incorrectly I took a pic of everything taken apart.

As usual I disconnected the battery first.

There is a cover above the serial number, a medium phillips holds it on.

To my surprise it was already using this part! And no play or slop in the rod. The only thing missing was the safety wire. I replaced that and went for a ride.

I guess we’ll call it good. I have a spare HD Urethane coupler if I need it.

Parts:

Tools:

  • 10MM wrench
  • 12MM wrench
  • 8MM wrench
  • Safety wire
  • Pliers
  • Phillips head screwdriver
