Installing Vintage Air Cooled Products Door & Window Handles, bonus Fixing Door Handle Splines

My beetle came with some really cheap door and window cranks that had seen better days. I bought a “nice” set of Empi handles off of JBugs and they were just cheap looking, the knobs didn’t spin and the finish was rough. So I kept looking around. I saw these great looking door and window cranks from Vintage Air Cooled Products. The model I went with are the Viper and they exude quality.

The fit and finish on these is top notch. It really brings up the interior of your beetle.

They attach with set screws and they include the surround/bushing that sits against the interior. They even include a 2mm wrench for installation. They are nice to use and look great, what more do you need?

Now for me, I had one hiccup with installation. In the previous 60 years this car has been around, someone just butchered the splines on the door handle and it would not allow for the set screws to go in all the way and sit flush.

Normally I’d go at this with a dremel, but I figured this needed a little more precision and it is pretty tight space.

A few minutes cleaning that up with a set of Stahwille files and it was good as new.

I love an easy project 🙂
