Fuel Pump Replacement Part 4: The Finish Line

The fuel pump again? Yes, but I think everything is fixed now.

Previous posts for the curious:

TL;DR – My engine was getting slowly covered in gunk from a leaking fuel pump. I replaced it with a great rebuilt unit from Sparxwerks. There was a minimal leak of gas on the pump. Not wanting to burn the beetle up I replaced the hose clamps with fuel injector clamps. Still it leaked the tiniest of amounts of fuel. Which gets us to here, the fuel lines are getting replaced with 5.5mm German fuel lines from Belmetric.

The fuel line was perfect, all the clamps I bought were the wrong size. So I reused some old hose clamps and some of the fuel injector clamps.

Again we clamp hoses and start to remove things. I removed the air cleaner for easier access to the hose between the carb and the fuel pump. I replaced these and then did a test for leaks. After this was all good I put the beetle on ramps and got to the hose between the filter and the pump.

Again with the clamping, this time clamping the line from the tank to the filter. After I attached the new hose and reused the old hose clamp I cut the hose to length and attached it to the pump.

Under the watchful eyes of my dogsI tightened everything up using the rule of thumb “tight enough so you can’t pull the hose off”.

I tested everything while still on the ramps by running the motor for a bit. I did not see any leaks so lets hope this is the final fix. One thing since this is new to me, wow have I wasted money buying the wrong size and kind of hose clamps 🙂

As an aside, this fuel filter looks really good and I like how it is metal and attached with that hose clamp. Anyone know who makes it?
